Cheyenne from the 1986 film
Aliens was designed with both the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter and the F-4 Phantom fighter jet as a basis.
British Aerospace was [secretly] contracted to design the weaponry and spacecraft for Aliens. The dropship is a composite of the cockpit from the Apache helicopter, and engine cowling from old British planes.
The dropship features strongly in the movie and spawned the memorable quote "Express Elevator to Hell", now in common use by military pilots, as well as the quote "We are in the pipe, five by five", used in the Starcraft video games.
The dropship concept has been widely used in subsequent movies, such as Starship Troopers and Avatar.
